Cutting Intarsia

When we did the Wood Duck we used the one pattern cutting method. We were asked what some of the other methods were so we decided to post them here.

Als wir die Farb-Ente gesägt haben, haben wir die Eine-Vorlage-Methode angewandt. Wir wurden gefragt, welche anderen Methoden es gibt und so haben wir uns entschlossen, diese hier vorzustellen.




For this discussion of different ways of cutting intarsia projects we will use a small 16 piece apple blossom pattern.

Für die Diskussion der unterschiedlichen Wege, ein Intarsia-Projekt zu sägen, nutzen wir eine kleine 16-Teile-Apfelblüten Vorlage.

Method 1.
Multiple patterns: Make enough copies (4 - 10) of the original so you can cut them up to get a good copy (not cut on the saw lines) of each and every piece. Glue these individual pattern pieces to their proper wood selections making sure to follow the wood grain directions and cut out, fit, shape, sand and glue together. A simple 16 piece pattern requires a minimum of 4 copies plus one to lay your cut pieces on.

Methode 1 - Viele Vorlagen: Fertigt genügend Kopien (4-10) des Originals an, damit Ihr von jedem einzelnen Teil eine gute Vorlage erhaltet (schneidet um jedes Teil herum, ohne auf der Linie zu schneiden). Klebt diese einzelnen Vorlagenteile auf die passende Holzauswahl und beachtet dabei die Holzmaserung. Sägt aus, passt an und leimt die Teile zusammen. Für eine einfache 16-Teile Vorlage benötigt man mindestens 4 Kopien und dazu noch eine, auf der die ausgesägten Teile ausgelegt werden können.



Method 2.
Paper template: Make a copy of the pattern and cut all the pattern pieces out (cutting on the saw lines) with a scissors. Scissors do not remove material when they cut like a saw blade does. Use spray glue to attach to the wood making sure to align with the wood grain and cut around all pattern pieces. Fit, shape, sand and glue together.

Methode 2- Papier-Vorlage: Kopiert die Vorlage einmal und schneidet jedes Teil einzeln mit einer Schere aus. Eine Schere entfernt kein Material, wie z. B. ein Sägeblatt. Benutzt Sprühkleber um die Vorlage auf das Holz aufzubringen, wobei Ihr wieder die Holzmaserung beachtet und sägt alle Teile aus. Passt an, schleift und leimt die Teile aneinander.

Method 3.
Template: Make a copy of the pattern and lightly spray glue on the back and attach it to a suitable template material (1/8" Baltic birch plywood or acrylic). After cutting out all pieces, cutting on the pattern lines. Remove the paper pattern and lightly sand the edges and bottom. Select the wood for each pattern piece. Place the template to take advantage of the grain pattern on each piece and draw around the template. Cut all pieces-fit, shape, sand and glue together.

Methode 3. Schablone: Erstellt eine Kopie der Vorlage, bringt eine dünne Schicht Sprühkleber auf und klebt die Vorlage auf eine Schablone, z. B. eine dünne Platte Sperrholz. Nachdem Ihr die Teile ausgesägt habt (sägt auf den Linien), entfernt Ihr die Papiervorlage und schleift die Kanten und die Flächen vorsichtig ab. Wählt das Holz für jedes Vorlagenteil aus und legt die Schablone entsprechend der Maserung auf das Holz. Zeichnet um die Schablone herum, sägt die Teile aus, passt sie an, schleift und leimt sie zusammen.

Method 4.
Tracing the pattern: Make a copy of the pattern so as not to ruin the original. Place the pattern over the piece of wood you wish to use making sure to take advantage of its color and grain variations. While holding the pattern in place at the corner slip the carbon paper under the paper. Trace around the piece you want to cut out with a sharp pencil or pen. Cut out the pieces by cutting and all the others by following the drawn lines- fit, shape, sand and glue together.

Methode 4. - Die Vorlage nachzeichnen: Fertigt eine Kopie der Vorlage an, damit Ihr das Original nicht zerstört. Legt nun die Vorlage über das Stück Holz, das Ihr verwendet wollt und stellt sicher, dass Ihr die Farbe und die Maserung beachtet. Während Ihr mit einer Hand die Vorlage an der Stelle festhaltet, schiebt Ihr Kohlepapier unter die Vorlage und zieht die Linie, die Ihr übertragen wollt, mit einem spitzen Stift oder Bleistift nacht. Sägt die Teile aus, indem Ihr den Linien folgt, passt die Teile an, schleift und leimt sie zusammen.

Some variations to the above procedures are (1) After cutting one piece; draw a new cut line on the next pattern piece using the mating edge of the cut wood piece. Continue doing this with the rest of the pieces or groups of pieces. (2) Cut the pieces on the outside of the lines and then put them together (tape or glue) and resaw or sand to fit. Continue resawing or sanding until all pieces fit.

Einige Vatiationen der oben beschriebenen Vorgehensweise sind 1.: Nachdem Ihr ein Teil ausgesägt hat, zieht Ihr eine neue Sägelinie auf dem nächsten Vorlagenteil, indem Ihr die passende Kante von dem bereits gesägten Holzteil dafür nutzt. Setzt dies mit allen Teilen fort. 2.: Sägt die Teile außerhalb der Linien aus, fügt sie zusammen und sägt sie neu (haltet sie fest zusammen und sägt mit einem dünnen Sägeblatt dazwischen, bis die Teile aneinander passen) oder schleift sie, bis sie zusammen passen. Fahrt damit fort, bis alle Teile passen.
