In contrast to intarsia the pieces are cut from a single slice of wood. The pieces are stained afterwards.

The only one that you have to please is you as you and all of us are our own worst critics.
The project is outstanding and you should be very proud of it. Can't wait to see it finished and look forward to seeing your first intarsia.

The one thing to do is to paint the edge of the shim black. Then it is less noticeable hanging on a wall.
You can also use a piece of the same wood and glue and sand it to the size of your piece. Then you will only have a glue line and that might be covered with stain and or your finish.
You can also lower the pieces around the tail by rounding the tree trunk sanding it lower from the center to the outer edge. This can also be done by the paw and arm in front of the tree or a shim could be added and there would only be a small area by the paw that it would show. If the end of the tail needs to be raised higher just add a shim to the last two pieces and sand to meet the rest of the tail pieces. This way there are no shims to show when the project is done.
With the snout pieces raised the shim will not show so its just a matter of sanding them to match the other pieces.
The side of the head, next to the tree should be rounded more so it appears to be back further on the branch.
We hope this helps.
God Bless
